PTAs to be reintroduced into education management to boost outcomes — Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) will be reinstated in the management of educational institutions across the country.

According to him, this move will help improve educational outcomes and support institutions in producing quality human capital for national development.

Mr. Iddrisu made this statement while delivering a keynote address at the launch of a public school renovation project in Bubiashie, located in the Okaikwei Central constituency.

The project, which will see the upliftment of about 11 public schools, is being spearheaded by the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Adomako, and was launched on Monday, February 17.

“I am particularly happy to announce that PTAs will be reintroduced into the management of education in Ghana under the presidency of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. This will enable parents and teachers to work together to improve learning outcomes in our educational institutions and support the production of quality human capital for our country,” he stated.

PTAs have traditionally played a significant role in school management, particularly in maintaining infrastructure and providing other essential support.

However, in January 2024, the Ghana Education Service (GES) initiated plans to rename PTAs as Parent Associations, arguing that some PTA operations hindered the government’s efforts to ensure universal access to education, especially at the Senior High School level.

Specifically, GES stated that PTA levies made it difficult for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to fully benefit from the free basic and secondary education policies.
