Provide additional security measures to protect us — MoMo Association urges gov’t amid frequent killing of members

The Mobile Money Association of Ghana has called on the government to provide additional security protection for its members and customers.

According to the association, this is crucial to safeguard their lives and contribution to the financial sector in light of frequent fatal attacks by armed robbers.

In a statement released on Friday, February 14, the MoMo agents said the recent killing of one of its members has left them in fear as their lives continue to be at risk.

“We urge the government to take immediate and decisive action to address this worrying situation. We request that [the government] provide additional security measures to protect mobile money agents and their customers, and increase police presence and patrols in areas prone to armed robbery attacks,” they appealed.

They further called on the government to direct all security agencies to organize quarterly workshops for the association’s leadership, which would then pass on the training to their members during regular meetings.

The MoMo agents urged the state to show genuine concern for their welfare and safety beyond policy regulations and revenue collection.

Their demands come in the wake of the tragic death of Ms. Patricia Nimako, who was shot and killed by armed robbers in the Ashanti Region.
