The Majority in Parliament has personally apologized to former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta following a recent raid on his residence by national security personnel.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, February 11, 2025, a group of individuals, including some dressed in military and police uniforms, stormed the Cantonments residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

At the time of the raid, Ofori-Atta was out of the country, receiving medical treatment in the United States. However, his wife and other family members were present when the unannounced intrusion took place.

Eyewitnesses reported that about 12 individuals were involved—five in military uniforms, one in a police uniform, and the rest in civilian clothing. Their purpose and the circumstances surrounding the raid remain unclear.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga condemned the raid, calling it regrettable and reaffirming the Mahama government’s commitment to upholding the rights of all citizens.

He stated that an internal investigation into the incident identified Richard Jakpa, an official at the National Security Coordinator’s office, as the leader of the operation.

“H.E. President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to ensuring that the rights and liberties of every individual are respected. We have received assurances from the office of the National Security Coordinator that the incident was not intended to happen.

“That occurrence is most regrettable and unfortunate and he [Jakpa] wants to give this house his words and assurances that a thing like that should never happen again.

“The Majority remains committed that institutions function properly, officials act in accordance with the law, that the rights and liberties of citizens are upheld under the leadership of President Mahama. I personally extend my apologies to the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and I believe the issue should suffice,” he emphasised.
