Open defecation downgrades you as a human – M-CODe

Open defecation downgrades you as a human – M-CODe

Mr Francis Ameyibor, National Convenor of the Media Coalition Against Open Defecation (M-CODe), has unequivocally stated that the practice of open defecation strips individuals of their fundamental human dignity.

"The act of open defecation is a clear indication that we have lost our sense of humanity," declared Mr Ameyibor in a statement issued on Wednesday in Accra.

Mr Ameyibor noted, "When we defecate in the open, we are essentially saying that we are no better than animals. This is unacceptable, and it's time we take collective action to reclaim our dignity as humans."

The M-CODe National Convenor emphasizes that open defecation is not merely a sanitation issue but a human rights concern, stressing that the practice perpetuates inequality, undermines human dignity, and exacerbates poverty.

“Open defecation contaminates water sources, leading to the spread of diseases like cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid fever,” he noted.

He said M-CODe is calling on policymakers, traditional leaders, community members, and the media to join forces in combating open defecation.

Mr Ameyibor said the coalition is advocating, among other things, an increase in investment in sanitation infrastructure, strengthened policies and laws supporting sanitation and hygiene, and public awareness campaigns promoting behaviour change.

The M-CODe National Convenor also urged the media to use its platforms to amplify the voices of those affected by open defecation, to hold duty bearers accountable, and to promote sustainable solutions.

"We will not rest until every Ghanaian has access to safe, dignified, and sustainable sanitation facilities. The time for change is now. Let us join forces to reclaim our humanity and eradicate open defecation once and for all," Mr Ameyibor stated.

This bold declaration underscores the coalition's commitment to eradicating open defecation and promoting improved sanitation and hygiene practices across Ghana.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), open defecation is a pervasive issue affecting over 2.3 billion people worldwide, with Ghana being no exception.

The country's rural and peri-urban areas are disproportionately affected, with an estimated 4.2 million people resorting to open defecation due to inadequate access to sanitation facilities.

As Ghana strives to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6, which aims to ensure access to sanitation and hygiene for all, the Media Coalition Against Open Defecation remains resolute in its pursuit of a sanitation revolution.
