Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, has stated that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, does not need to commit any wrongdoing to be removed from his position.
According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, should such a move be considered, it would be based on the need for a fresh direction in the police administration, not as a result of any misconduct.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV on Monday, February 10, he clarified that he has no personal issues with the IGP.
“I don’t have any personal views about him [IGP Dampare] as I speak. I don’t know of any evidence of specific wrongdoing against him. He does not need to have done wrong to be changed—understand the point I’m making.
“So, if he is changed, it’s not because he has done something wrong. It’s just that the President may think a new direction is needed at the police headquarters or in the leadership of the police,” he explained.
Readers may recall that the IGP previously faced intense criticism, even within the police force, with some officers allegedly conspiring with NPP bigwigs to remove him from office.
A leaked recording in 2024 captured three officers conspiring with former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Daniel Bugri Naabu, to strategize the IGP’s removal allegedly to aid the then ruling party rig the elections.
Despite these challenges, several civil society organizations and political commentators have argued that Dr. Dampare has justified his position through his performance and, therefore, should not be removed.
