President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has served notice to individuals who believe they can loot state resources and go unpunished.
The President, who has vowed to clamp down on corruption, insists that Ghana is no longer a safe haven for corrupt practices.
Speaking after receiving a report from the committee tasked with gathering information for his anti-corruption drive, Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL), on Monday, February 10, the President said the findings would be treated with some sense of urgency.
“For those who think they can defraud the state and escape justice, let this serve as a strong warning: Ghana is no longer a safe haven for corruption,” President Mahama said.
He further assured anti-corruption campaigners of his administration’s commitment to accountability and urged them to count on his government for support.
“To those who stand for integrity, accountability, and the rule of law, I assure you that this government remains your steadfast partner in building a nation where honesty and hard work are rewarded,” he said.
“We must all play our part—citizens, civil society, the media, and public officials alike. Together, we will build a Ghana that is just, transparent, and prosperous for generations to come,” he stressed.
Chairman of the Committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, revealed that the state could recover $702.8 million if buyers of state properties are made to pay fair market prices.
He explained that some of the acquired lands, which were purchased for as little as GH¢42,000, GH¢120,000, and GH¢160,000, are actually worth between $500,000 and $600,000.
The ORAL Committee further disclosed that Ghana stands to recoup $20.49 billion from 36 cases currently under investigation.
“Moving forward, we want to conclude with some fascinating figures. The 36 cases we have reviewed in detail could yield as much as $20.49 billion if recoveries are successful,” Mr. Ablakwa noted.
