Former Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul has cautioned that Ghana is not immune to Coup d'état.

Speaking to Asempa FM on the ‘Ekosii sen’ programme on Monday, February 10, the Member of Parliament for Bimbilla disclosed that some people plotted a coup in 2019 but were unsuccessful.

According to him, Ghana can experience a coup if care is not taken.

“Some people were planning a coup in 2019. Coup can happen in Ghana at any time if care is not taken,” Dominic Nitiwul shared.

In his assessment of the country’s military, the former Defence Minister assured that Ghana has very strong armed forces.

He was, however, quick to add that the nation needs to continue strengthening the Armed Forces and all security agencies.

“Ghana has a strong armed forces. Ghana needs about 50,000 military men to be able to stabilize the country. Ghana needs the armed forces at all times to keep the country intact,” Dominic Nitiwul said.

Since his government left office, Dominic Nitiwul has been replaced by Dr. Omane Boamah as the new Defence Minister.

Serving in President John Dramani Mahama’s government, Dr. Boamah must build on the works of Mr. Nitiwul to keep the country safe against any coup.
