We have inherited the worst unemployment situation in Ghana’s history; fix it – Mahama to Employment Minister

President John Dramani Mahama has bemoaned the unemployment situation in Ghana as inherited from the immediate past New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

As of 2023 end, the average rate of unemployment in the country rose to over 14.7 percent according to data from the Ghana Statistical Service.

Today, President John Dramani Mahama has tasked the Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Rashid Pelpuo to fix it.

Delivering an address after swearing in the Minister, the President raised concern about the current unemployment rate, arguing that it is the worst in the country’s history.

He admonished the Minister to work with stakeholders to ensure the millions of Ghanaian youth without jobs can find job.

“Rashid Pelpuo you come into office at a time when we have inherited the worst unemployment situation in our country’s history. With millions of Ghanaian youth despairing over the frustration of not being able to find a job. It will be your mandate to work with stakeholders to turn this disturbing around and to foster a harmonious labour-government relationship,” President John Dramani Mahama said.

The President today swore in 17 people including Ministers of State and Regional Ministers.

This brings the total number of appointees by the President to 42, ensuring that he is on course to achieving his target of 60 ministers.

In his address, President John Dramani Mahama indicated that his government has shown that it is possible to run a lean government.

He urged all Ministers to give their best output to ensure efficiency.
