Washrooms at Kotokuraba Market turned into Tomato storage area

Some washrooms at the Kotokuraba market in Cape Coast in the Central Region have been turned into a storage area.

During a visit to the washrooms, it was observed that edible vegetables such as tomatoes and onions were kept in the washrooms.

These vegetables were kept in plastic baskets and placed very close to the men’s urinal bowl, while others were kept closer to the wash basin. Other items identified in the washroom include plastic bowls and plastic baskets.

Although the washrooms looked as though they were not in use, it was obvious that it has been used before.

Speaking with a Food Engineer at the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Ernest Teye said the act is a food crime which threatens public health and needs urgent attention.

Prof. Teye called on authorities to act swiftly to ensure that the vegetables identified are not sold to the public but destroyed.

He further called on the market authorities to provide periodic training on the proper way to store food items among traders.

With the surge in cholera cases in the Central Region, it is suspected that actions of this sort could be a major factor hence the need for all stakeholders to get on board in implementing preventive measures to help curtail such acts.
