#Election2024: But for Bawumia’s campaign, NPP may have only secured 60 seats instead of 88 – Kyei Mensah-Bonsu

Former Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has acknowledged former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's massive role in ensuring the New Patriotic Party (NPP) secured 88 parliamentary seats in the 2024 general election.

According to him, if not for the work done by Dr. Bawumia during his campaign as flagbearer of the NPP, the party may have only secured 60 of the parliamentary seats.

“The campaign run by Bawumia was unlike any I’ve seen before. I wonder, what if he hadn’t run that campaign? Perhaps the consequences would have been different. Maybe we would have secured 60 seats instead of 88,” Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu told Abusua FM in an interview.

Sharing his view on the future of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former majority leader argued that it’s too late to say for certain whether the former Vice President should be the flagbearer of the NPP in the 2028 general election.

He wants the party to do its post-election analysis to ascertain what caused its defeat in the 2024 polls before deciding on future steps.

“It’s too early to say whether Bawumia should continue, considering that the committee’s findings have not been established yet. It wouldn’t be wise to make a decision now, so we should wait to see the committee’s findings,” Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu stressed.

Dr. Bawumia as flagbearer of the NPP led a robust campaign in the lead-up to the 2024 general election.

He toured the various regions multiple times to drum home his message and often engaged in door-to-door engagements with Ghanaians on the grounds.
