The state-owned Daily Graphic newspaper has come under fire from the Ministry of Education and the National Identification Authority (NIA) for publishing what they consider misleading information on Tuesday, February 4.
The NIA stated that the charges, posted as a reminder on its Facebook page, were approved by Parliament in 2023 and had not been revised, refuting the newspaper’s claim that it had implemented new charges for Ghana Card services.
The payments apply only to Premium Centres, while District Offices remain free for first-time registrations, the NIA confirmed in a statement, calling the Daily Graphic’s claim “false and untrue.”
The Ministry of Education also denied the newspaper’s banner headline, “Teacher Trainee Allowance to go,” which implied that the government would no longer pay teacher trainee allowances.
The Minister had outlined plans to increase financial support through an enhanced loan scheme, although allowances would remain in place until further stakeholder consultations, the Ministry emphasised.
According to the Ministry, the headline was misleading, and the newspaper should correct the impression.
To prevent misunderstandings among the public, both organisations urged media outlets to verify information before publishing.
