Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a major shift in the teacher trainee allowance policy.

According to the Minister, the current allowance scheme will be transitioned into an enhanced student loan scheme to enable students to cover their own feeding and personal expenses.

The former Minority Leader said this while speaking to some principals of teacher training colleges over the weekend at his office in Accra.

“More importantly, you raised the issue of student allowances—it will continue. However, after the upcoming National Education Forum, we will take some major decisions based on the forum’s recommendations.

“But offhand, there’s no way we should be feeding a student at the tertiary level. We need to transition the allowance into an enhanced student loan for them to cater for themselves. In the interim, they will still receive the allowance for the next few months while we finalize the transition,” he explained.

The Minister stated that feeding students at the tertiary level is unsustainable and should be limited to basic and senior high school levels under the Free Senior High School policy.

“We can continue feeding students at the basic and senior high levels, but for tertiary students, we should help them access enhanced support to take care of their own feeding. In the coming months, we will phase out the current allowance system, subject to the recommendations from the National Education Forum,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
