PTD mourns Enugu Tanker explosion victims, pleads rehabilitation of bad roads, stakeholders engagement

The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic tanker explosion at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, which resulted in the loss of lives.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning, January 25, 2025, at approximately 11:30 a.m., when a fuel-laden tanker overturned while navigating the hilly, poorly maintained, and heavily trafficked expressway.

The PTD National Chairman, Comrade Lucky Osesua, made this statement on Monday, January 27, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja when approached by journalists. Initially reluctant to speak, he was eventually persuaded to provide a brief comment, though he later requested understanding as he needed to attend another meeting in the city center.

Osesua was accompanied by his lawyers and other national executives, including Comrade Dayyabu Garga, Comrade (Chief) Peter Muodebelu, affectionately known as ONWA, Comrade (Dr) Humble Obinna Power, and Comrade Olabisi Akinlolu.

He described the incident as unfortunate and heartbreaking, urging both state and federal governments to intensify efforts to repair the damaged portions of roads across the country to prevent future accidents that could result in loss of life and serious injuries.

The union leader also took the opportunity to extend his heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, as well as to the government of Enugu State, including Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. He emphasized that the incident highlights the urgent need to enhance safety measures to avert such tragedies in the future.

"When I received the news on Saturday, I quickly called all my executives to mobilize necessary resources to mitigate the potential impact of the incident on the community and other road users. I commend Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for visiting the accident scene and promising support for the victims, which is highly commendable. I also want to acknowledge the professionalism and dedication of the Enugu State Fire and Rescue Service operatives in swiftly extinguishing the fire."

"Furthermore, I urge both state and federal governments, particularly the Federal Ministry of Works, to prioritize the repair of our country's damaged roads. This will significantly contribute to the safety of lives and property."

"As critical stakeholders, we are committed to ensuring that maximum safety standards are upheld. We will continue to advocate for additional safety measures and emphasize the need for road rehabilitation, including the protection of tanker drivers who often face criminal attacks while performing their duties. PTD and our parent union, NUPENG, will persist in working closely with all relevant agencies to enhance safety, security, and law enforcement on our roads for the greater good."

Osesua concluded with a prayer that the souls of the departed may find eternal rest in the Lord’s kingdom.
