Akufo-Addo embarrassed, denigrated me and other Volta chiefs in 2020; he also accused me — Togbe Afede

Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, has revealed that in 2020, he and some prominent chiefs from the Volta Regional House of Chiefs were publicly denigrated and embarrassed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Togbe Afede recounted how the region was flooded with military personnel prior to the 2020 general elections, which led to their visit to the former President, accompanied by then-Regional Minister Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa and Hohoe NPP parliamentary candidate Peter Amewu.

Speaking during President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to Ho as part of his nationwide thank-you tour, the President of the Asogli Traditional Area said the former President Akufo-Addo accused them of being NDC supporters who were illegally registering Togolese nationals to vote for the party.

“I recall that in 2020, when Volta felt under siege from soldiers sent from Accra in the run-up to the elections, we came together. A number of chiefs from the Volta House of Chiefs visited the then-President to appeal for mercy on our people.

“Sadly, we left extremely disappointed. For instance, it was said that I, Togbe, was going around the registration centers interfering with the process, which was not true. It was said that we, the chiefs, were all NDC and that we typically imported voters from Togo, holding them for weeks so they could vote for the NDC. Those were the comments made against us, right in our presence,” he recalled.

Togbe Afede urged President Mahama not to repeat the actions of his predecessor and thanked him for offering the region a minister who promises to be a good representative.
