The Minister of Interior designate, Muntaka Mubarak, has bemoaned the inhumane conditions inmates are subjected to in the country’s prisons.

Appearing before the Appointment Committee of Parliament for vetting on Friday, January 24, the Asawase Member of Parliament raised concern about the congestion and feeding issues.

He proposed that it is important for the government to collaborate with the private sector to put up facilities that will lead to the decongestion of prisons in various parts of the country.

“We will explore public-private partnerships in the congestion of our prisons,” the Minister of Interior designate said.

Once approved as the Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mubarak will work with the various security agencies in the country.

One area he plans to prioritise is the tooling of the Ghana National Fire Service. During his vetting, he disclosed that the Service has not received any new fire tender since 2016.

He described the Service as an orphan under the Ministry of Interior, assuring that he will pay close attention to the Service when approved.

“This is another Orphan within the team. This is one of the serious orphans and I can assure you that when I was taking brief I found it very sad. Just as fire is God to cook fire is also good to destroy. The bottom line is that all of us think that God will take care of emergencies and the negative things once every morning we wake up and pray everything will be okay. There has been no new fire tender for the Ghana Fire Service since 2016… I’m going to pay close attention to the Ghana Fire Service,” Muntaka Mubarak said.
