Former government spokesperson on the economy, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain hopeful and loyal to the party’s ideals despite its loss in the 2024 general elections.
He encouraged members to stay true to the party’s principles and ideologies as it transitions into opposition for the next four years.
In a social media post on Friday, January 24, Dr. Boakye-Danquah also called for tolerance toward new members who may join the party and acceptance of those who may decide to leave.
“Let’s keep our faith and loyalty to the party, its principles, ideologies, and what held our founding fathers together. Yes, we lost the elections, but we’ve not lost our right and responsibility to the Ghanaian people. Ghana loves us, and we love Ghana.
“By all means, let’s restrategize. Let’s rebuild. Let’s regroup. We may lose some people, but let’s not be worried. There’s nothing that we NPP can’t do with the help of God. We will also have new people joining us. Let’s welcome them,” he stated.
The Electoral Commission’s official results, with one constituency yet to be declared, showed that the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) John Dramani Mahama secured 6,591,790 votes (56.42%) to defeat the NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 4,877,611 votes (41.75%).
The NDC also won an overwhelming majority in Parliament, securing 183 seats, while the NPP, previously the majority party, managed just 88 seats.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has attributed the party’s defeat to spiritual factors rather than conventional political issues.
“It was as though our members decided not to vote. In all sixteen regions, it seemed as if NPP supporters had made an agreement not to cast their votes. This is highly unusual and cannot be attributed to regular political reasons,” he said in an interview with Kumasi-based Ash FM.
“I appeal to the pastors who intercede for us. A lot of spiritual machinations occurred ahead of the 2024 elections. Things took place in the spiritual realm, which I believe influenced the outcome. Many pastors and women of prayer, who should have been praying for us, withheld their support because of anger, and that definitely impacted the results,” he added.
