The Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has pledged that his side of the house will collaborate with the Majority side to strengthen Ghana’s democracy.
Congratulating the new Majority leadership in Parliament on Thursday, January 23, Afenyo-Markin urged the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, to minimize excessive debates to ensure efficient government business.
“I want to congratulate the new team once more and assure them that our side will treat them with respect. We will work together, beautify democracy, and assure the nation that although it is NDC and NPP, it is about systems and structures,” he said.
“As a government leader, if you try to introduce more debates, government business will suffer,” the Effutu MP added.
The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament has undergone significant changes following a reshuffle.
This reshuffle follows the appointment of all four leaders of the Majority side to ministerial portfolios by President John Dramani Mahama.
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the former Majority Leader, now serves as the Finance Minister.
His deputy, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has been nominated as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
Kwame Governs Agbodza, who was the Majority Chief Whip, has been named the Minister for Roads and Highways, while his deputy, Ahmed Ibrahim, has been appointed Minister for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Leading the NDC side in the 9th Parliament is Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga, who will be assisted by George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, MP for Cape Coast South.
The new Majority Chief Whip is Rockson-Nelson Kwami Etse Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi.
He will be deputized by Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, MP for Ada, and Richard Acheampong, MP for Bia East, as first and second deputy Chief Whips, respectively.
