The Union of Trainee Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UTNMG) has extended heartfelt congratulations to Kwabena Mintah Akandoh following his recent appointment as Minister for Health by President H.E. John Dramani Mahama.
In a statement released by the union, there is a sense of optimism regarding the leadership Minister Akandoh will provide to the country's health sector. The UTNMG has expressed eagerness to collaborate closely with him to tackle the significant challenges currently affecting the healthcare system.
UTNMG President Robert Immortal and General Secretary Robert Kobla Alavi voiced their warm regards to the new Minister, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to engage with him and utilize his expertise. The union is hopeful that under Akandoh's guidance, there will be meaningful strides toward enhancing the healthcare environment for both professionals and patients alike.
The occasion was also used to spotlight critical issues, including outstanding allowances owed to healthcare trainees. The union called for urgent attention to the unpaid arrears from the previous administration, which pose significant financial obstacles for trainees across the nation. With Minister Akandoh now at the helm, the UTNMG expressed hope for an expedited resolution to ensure financial support for aspiring healthcare professionals.
Additionally, the union urged the new Minister to prioritize the employment of qualified nurses, midwives, and psychiatric graduates who have recently completed their training. This appeal includes graduates from the 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 cohorts, many of whom are anxious to contribute to the healthcare system but face uncertainty about their job prospects.
The UTNMG also highlighted the considerable challenges trainees face daily, particularly the lack of essential medical supplies. The shortage of critical items, such as personal protective equipment, has significantly hindered the delivery of safe and effective care. The union raised concerns about trainees facing dismissal due to non-payment of fees and called for alternative solutions that would prevent penalties, especially in light of the financial hardships many currently face.
Expressing confidence in Minister-Designate Akandoh’s ability to navigate these pressing issues, the union recognizes his extensive experience and proven leadership in the healthcare field as crucial assets during this challenging period.
The UTNMG reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the new Minister and working collaboratively with his office, emphasizing their dedication to advancing Ghana’s healthcare system.
