Stephen Atubiga, a former Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and an ardent critic of President John Dramani Mahama has urged the latter to include people from diverse backgrounds in the recently established Constitutional Review Committee.

In a social media post on Wednesday, January 22, the National Liberation Congress (NLC) founder wrote, “John Dramani should add reps of farmers, traders, drivers, artisans, vendors, reps of all political parties, Traditional, Christian to the constitutional review committee.”

This comes after President John Dramani Mahama fulfilled his pledge to commence the constitutional review process by appointing a Constitutional Review Committee to lead modifications to Ghana's 1992 Constitution.

Prof. H. Kwesi Prempeh, a renowned law scholar and advocate of democracy, chairs the eight-member group.

Justice Sophia Adinyirah, Prof. Kwame Karikari, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, Dr. Godwin Djokoto, Ibrahim Tanko Amidu, Dr. Esi Ansah, and the secretary, Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya, are among the other members.

The group is charged with filling in the gaps and resolving issues found in the work of earlier constitutional review committees, such as the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative group, according to a January 19 statement from the presidency.

“The composition of the Committee underscores the President’s desire to engage persons of proven expertise, dedication to the service of the nation, and commitment to good governance,” the statement noted in part.

Within five months, Prof. Prempeh and his group are supposed to deliver concrete suggestions meant to improve democratic governance and solve issues with the current constitution.

Re-examining issues brought up in past constitutional assessments that some experts claim were not completely implemented is part of the committee's mandate.

Among these, concerns about public accountability, decentralisation, and governance frameworks are crucial.

To guarantee that the reforms represent the goals of Ghanaians, the presidency underlined that the government will give careful consideration to the recommendations.
