New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has taken a swipe at US President Donald Trump for his harsh criticism of his predecessor Joe Biden during his second-term inauguration speech.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Gabby highlighted the contrast between Trump’s tone and the example set by Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama during his January 7, 2025, inauguration.
“Trump should have learnt from the swearing-in of Ghana's come-back President at Ghana's Jan 7 inauguration.
“Was there any need for the US President to have such a nasty go at his predecessor after winning such a massive endorsement and after his own swearing-in for a delayed second term?” Gabby wrote.
Gabby acknowledged Trump’s decisive actions upon resuming office but urged him to show greater tact.
“I admire the decisiveness of taking such bold, even if controversial, decisions on his first day in office. Best of luck to both leaders and their citizens,” he added.
Trump’s remarks
President Trump, during his speech at the swearing-in ceremony, slammed the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris administration over a number of issues, including his 2020 election loss and recent presidential pardons granted by President Biden.
The US President also criticised the prosecution of the people responsible for the riots at Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, promising to take action.
"It's action, not words, that counts... You are going to see a lot of action on the J6 hostages," he said.
Trump, right after his inauguration, signed executive orders to change some of the policies of the Biden administration. He signed an executive order for the release of more than 1,000 January 6 rioters who had been imprisoned.
He also signed an order to end citizenship documentation for babies of illegal immigrants and another order to declare illegal immigration a national emergency.
