Eugene Boakye Antwi, the former Member of Parliament for Subin Constituency, has accused some New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives of tarnishing the party’s image by selling Free Senior High School (Free SHS) placements to parents for exorbitant sums of money.

Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time with Kwesi Parker Wilson, Boakye Antwi alleged that the corrupt practices of certain party officials significantly contributed to the NPP’s humiliating defeat in the 2024 general elections.

“A lot of our people didn’t vote because some NPP executives sold Free SHS placement to them,” he claimed.

“I remember a certain woman was interviewed and said they took GH¢12,000 from her to secure a placement at Prempeh College,” he added.

The Free SHS program, a flagship policy of the NPP, was designed to provide equal educational opportunities for all Ghanaian children. However, Boakye Antwi lamented that the misconduct of some party executives undermined public trust in the program and the party.

He pointed to specific incidents, including the dismissal of an NPP treasurer in Assin North for allegedly taking a GH¢50,000 bribe from parents.

Boakye Antwi also revealed that similar cases were reported in other constituencies, including Assin Central, the stronghold of Kennedy Agyapong.

“These issues were widely discussed on MPs’ platforms. Even the Minister of Education said he needed evidence, but the woman’s televised account was as clear as it gets,” he remarked.

Adding to the NPP’s woes, Boakye Antwi highlighted unmet promises as another major factor that caused voter apathy.

He referenced the Subin Constituency, where the failure to deliver an Astroturf stadium disheartened residents and reduced turnout.

“Subin people refused to vote because of the lack of an Astroturf,” he said.
