Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has responded to President John Dramani Mahama's directive to investigate deaths related to the 2020 and 2024 elections, according to a report by the Chronicle Newspaper.
The report indicates that the IGP has established a specialized investigative team at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to address the matter. The team, composed of experienced officers from the Ghana Police Service, is chaired by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe and has been given clear timelines to complete its work and submit findings.
In his letter to the President, Dr. Akuffo Dampare assured that all necessary resources would be provided to the team to ensure the success of the investigation.
The Chronicle also noted that the investigative team’s efforts will build on previous work conducted by the IGP and his team since Dr. Dampare assumed office in 2021. One of his notable initiatives was the establishment of the Cold Case Unit at the CID Headquarters, tasked with pursuing unresolved criminal cases.
The Cold Case Unit, which has been handling investigations into the 2020 election-related deaths, has reportedly made significant progress, with some suspects currently facing prosecution.
President Mahama’s directive, issued in a letter dated January 10, 2025, called for a comprehensive investigation into the deaths that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 elections.
