The Acting Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has reassured the public that the government has taken steps to prevent a potential power crisis that emerged following the recent transition of power.
Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu stated that adequate fuel had been procured, with some shipments already arriving.
“Right after the transition, we discovered that there were major risks that needed to be tackled or else we would have faced some crisis. The most pressing concern was the power situation. Adequate fuel has now been purchased and some have arrived already,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
The comment follows the growing concerns over the availability of fuel, which had been feared to affect the country’s power supply.
Shortly after President John Dramani Mahama’s inauguration on January 7, 2025, reports indicated that the country faced a looming crisis in the power sector due to fuel shortages, which could have led to a disruption in electricity distribution.
This proactive measure was in response to warnings from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) about a looming power crisis due to insufficient fuel supplies for thermal plants.
A GRIDCo report highlighted the urgent need for nearly $90 million to procure liquid fuel, such as light crude oil, to operate thermal plants in Tema and meet growing electricity demand amid a scheduled WAPCo maintenance.
