The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has renewed its call for a state of emergency in response to the escalating illegal mining activities in Ghana, which continue to threaten the nation’s water bodies and environment.

The Coalition is also demanding the immediate repeal of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which they argue has opened up the country's forest reserve for mining.

In a statement released on Monday, January 20, the coalition highlighted the worsening situation, particularly following alarming reports from the Ghana Water Company Limited in August 2024.

The reports indicated the deteriorating quality of water at the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant, with turbidity levels reaching 14,000 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU), far exceeding the World Health Organization’s permissible limit of 5NTU.

“Mining on the water bodies is illegal…The President must declare a state of emergency over our water bodies and get the military to clear everyone found on the water bodies,” said Kenneth Ashigbey, Convenor of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey.

Meanwhile, the past NPP government made some efforts including the suspension of L.I. 2462 and deploying military officers to protect water bodies, the coalition argues that these measures have not been sufficient.

“The tragic incidents at Ntrotroso and Obuasi are a timely reminder that this problem is an explosive threat to national security and cohesion,” the coalition noted.

In the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, the galamsey issue became a prominent topic, with presidential candidates, including President John Dramani Mahama, signing a pledge to fight illegal mining.
