The National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called on Ghanaians to hold President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) accountable for the deaths of eight people in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, on Sunday, January 19.
In a statement shared on social media Monday, January 20, Mr. Ahiagbah accused the Mahama administration of negligence, claiming their failure to act decisively against lawless acts by some members of the NDC contributed to the tragic incident.
“Ghanaians must hold the NDC and the John Mahama administration responsible for the murder of these eight Ghanaians owing to their inaction to inform, caution, or advise the members of the NDC who have taken the laws into their own hands and storming institutions under the guise that it is their government that is in power,” Mr. Ahiagbah stated.
The incident in question occurred on the night of January 18, 2025, at the AngloGold Ashanti mining site in Obuasi.
According to reports, approximately 60 individuals armed with locally manufactured rifles and other weapons breached the mine’s security fence, leading to a confrontation with military personnel.
The Ghana Armed Forces reported that seven illegal miners were killed during the ensuing firefight, while one soldier sustained injuries.
In response to the tragic event, President Mahama ordered an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the clash and to ensure that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully are brought to justice.
The government also directed AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical expenses of the injured and to assist with burial arrangements for those who lost their lives.

Danquah-Edu, as well as the deaths of eight innocent people during the 2020 elections. Negligence is what happened when nothing was done about these killings.
