Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, has explained the rationale behind the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs’ #KenMustGo campaign, which called for the removal of then Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

In an interview on Oyerepa TV, Dr. Afriye revealed that the initiative stemmed from frustration over President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s refusal to heed calls from party members and the general public.

“We staged #KenMustGo because the president was not listening, and the executives were not listening. If the president was listening to the mood of Ghanaians, and even his own core party people, he would have acted. The message was clear: Sack Ken and restore confidence,” Dr. Afriye said.

He described the campaign as a significant period to redeem the party’s image, underlining the deep-seated dissatisfaction within the party.

“People saw this as an indicator of make or break within the party. It was unprecedented. When have you ever seen MPs rise against their government in this manner? It’s not good for any MP to do that, but it reflected the intensity of the situation,” he remarked.

“The removal of Ken Ofori-Atta would have been a clear signal of change and responsiveness to the people’s concerns,” he added.

The #KenMustGo movement began in October 2022, spearheaded by a group of NPP lawmakers led by Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, MP for Asante-Akim North.

The MPs demanded the dismissal of Ofori-Atta, referencing a need to restore public trust amidst worsening economic challenges.

Signed by about 80 NPP MPs, the petition served as a direct reaction to the party leadership’s inaction regarding earlier concerns. The lawmakers even threatened to withdraw support for the government and boycott the 2023 Budget if their demands were not addressed.
