The Ghana Police Service has restored calm at Nkwanta and its surrounding areas in the Oti Region following renewed communal clashes that claimed five lives and left five others injured.

In a press release dated January 17, 2025, the Police announced that reinforcement teams have been deployed to the area with support from the Military to maintain peace and stability.

“The Ghana Police Service has restored calm, law and order at Nkwanta and its environs in the Oti Region with the deployment of reinforcement teams to support the Regional Command,” the statement read.

The violent disturbances, which are linked to communal tensions, have resulted in the destruction of eight buildings and one shop. The injured victims are receiving treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the morgue.

The Inspector-General of Police has engaged the three chiefs in the area via telephone, appealing to them to cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace.

“The IGP has appealed to the chiefs to partner with the security agencies to maintain security, law, and order in the community,” the statement added.

The Oti Regional Police Commander is engaging local chiefs, opinion leaders, and community members as part of peace-building efforts. Investigations into the clashes are ongoing.

The Police assured residents of their commitment to restoring peace.

“We want to assure the public, particularly the people in Nkwanta and its environs, that the Police and the Military will continue to work together to ensure peace and security are maintained in the communities,”stressed the police.
