Education GH 7.50 feeding fee per student under Free SHS insufficient — CHASS

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has expressed concerns over the government’s allocation of GH₵7.50 per student for daily meals under the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, deeming it insufficient.

Primus Baro, CHASS’s National Secretary, stated, “My immediate response to that is that it is not enough.”

He highlighted the challenges posed by food shortages and the need for a realistic review of feeding fees.

“But going forward, I believe there will be a forum to review these figures and come up with something realistic,” he said.

Currently, the GH₵7.50 allocation covers three daily meals, with GH₵2.50 designated for perishable items and the remaining GH₵5.00 used by the government to purchase other food items distributed to schools.

In response to the ongoing food shortages, President John Mahama recently directed the release of stored food supplies to schools.

These supplies initially intended for drought relief, are now being redirected to address the immediate feeding challenges of SHS students.
