Dr. Tiah Abdul-Karim Mahama, Member of Parliament for Walewale has criticized President John Dramani Mahama for not appointing a National Security Minister, suggesting it reflects a lack of seriousness in his administration.
In an interview with Accra-based Starr FM on Thursday, January 16, Dr. Mahama expressed concern over the delay in appointing key ministers.
He stated, “If he was a serious President minded at national interest, he would have appointed a national security minister first, because your duty as a president is to safeguard the… national interest.”
Dr. Mahama also questioned the prioritization of regional ministers over critical portfolios, stating, “He has given us about 10 regional ministers. What would the regional ministers do? What is happening in the region? What is wrong?”
“You left out the Interior Ministry. You’ve not dealt with issues about road transport. These are the real sectors that will drive the economy,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Mahama has collapsed seven ministries, including the National Security Ministry, as part of a broader effort to streamline governance and reduce costs.
The restructuring aims to enhance efficiency and align with fiscal discipline— a requirement tied to the country’s $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Following the dissolution, President Mahama appointed a six-member interim National Security team to oversee the nation’s security.
The team is led by former Minister for the Interior Prosper Douglas Bani, and other seasoned professionals such as Lt. General Peter Augustine Blay (Rtd.), former Chief of Defence Staff, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, former Minister for National Security and retired police officer COP Kofi Boakye.
