President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Mohammed Abdul-Salam as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Lottery Authority (NLA).
This appointment, effective January 15, 2025, follows the recent resignation of Sammi Awuku from the position.
In an official letter dated January 15, 2025, the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, stated, “His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, has in accordance with Article 195 (1) of the Constitution and section 45(1) of the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722) appointed you as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Authority pending receipt of the Constitutionally required advice of the Board of the Authority, given in consultation with the Public Services Commission.”
Mohammed Abdul-Salam, previously the Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), brings a wealth of experience to his new role at the NLA.
His appointment is expected to ensure continuity and stability within the Authority during this transitional period.
Sammi Awuku’s resignation was officially submitted to the presidency on January 13, 2025.
The NPP stalwart, who served as NLA Director-General since August 2021, stepped down to focus on his duties as the newly elected Member of Parliament for Akuapem North.
In his resignation letter, Awuku stated, “In the light of this new responsibility, I wish to focus my efforts on serving as a Member of Parliament.”
The National Lottery Authority, established in 1958, is responsible for organizing lotteries in Ghana to generate revenue for national development.
The Authority has evolved over the years into an autonomous public service institution with a legal monopoly over the organization of lotteries in the country.
