Management of the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC) has announced plans to establish an interim committee to address the absence of a functioning Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
This decision follows the failure of the 2023/2024 SRC administration to conduct elections and successfully hand over to a new administration.
In a notice dated January 15, and signed by the Dean of Students, Dr. Rhodalene Amartey, management revealed that the leadership vacuum created by the stalled elections has adversely affected governance at the students’ front.
“To address this gap, the Dean of Students has been mandated by Management…to oversee the establishment of an Interim Committee to manage students’ affairs and provide leadership until a new UniMAC Constitution is adopted and a fully constituted SRC is elected,” the statement read in part.
The 2024/2025 SRC elections were marred by disputes that led to a deadlock.
Allegations of electoral malpractice, lack of consensus among candidates, and procedural errors rendered the process inconclusive.
This has left the institution without a representative of the student body for several months, raising concerns about the proper coordination of student activities and representation.
The planned interim committee, according to Dr. Amartey, will act as a temporary governing body to ensure the “continuity of representation and the smooth functioning of student activities.”
Management assured students that details of the nomination and election process for the interim committee would be communicated soon.
