Independent research firm Global InfoAnalytics has analyzed the 2024 election turnout, suggesting that the lower voter participation may have mitigated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat margin.
The firm reports that nearly 2.1 million voters from the 2020 elections did not participate in 2024. Of these, approximately 834,000 were identified as NPP supporters.
The data indicates that 40% of the non-voting 2020 electorate were NPP voters, 29% were floating voters, 8% were NDC supporters, 3% were from other parties, and 20% did not disclose their party affiliations.
In the Ashanti region, a stronghold for the NPP, 579,000 voters abstained, with 250,000 identified as NPP sympathizers.
The analysis suggests that had these NPP supporters participated, the party’s defeat margin could have been larger than the actual 1.7 million votes.
The firm concludes that the lower turnout “is a blessing for the NPP,” as increased participation from their supporters might have resulted in a more substantial defeat.
