Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, Member of Parliament for Walewale, has questioned the government’s plan to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
In a social media post on Tuesday, January 14, Dr. Mahama highlighted the company’s significant revenue increase, asking, “Why will we sell a company that has such huge prospects?”
He noted that between 2022 and 2023, ECG’s revenues rose from GHc8.7 billion to GHc14.3 billion, indicating strong financial growth.
Dr. Mahama expressed concern over the proposed privatization, suggesting that selling a company with such prospects may not be in the nation’s best interest.
President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at plans to privatize ECG as part of efforts to address inefficiencies and financial challenges within the energy sector.
During a meeting with a World Bank delegation on January 8, 2025, he stated, “If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to have a major problem with our whole power value chain.”
He emphasized the need for private sector involvement to enhance efficiency and modernize the power distribution system.
