Professor Ransford Gyampo, a Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to cover the stalled National Cathedral foundation pit.
He further advised him to use the end-of-service benefits of former President Akufo-Addo to defray part of the money spent on the project.
In a social media post on January 13, 2025, Prof Gyampo questioned Mahama’s role in continuing a project he believes was solely the result of Akufo-Addo’s personal pledge to God.
“Please cover that expensive hole, using the end-of-service benefits of Mr Akufo Addo to defray part of the cost and let people culpable be charged for causing financial loss to the state,” he noted.
He urged Mahama to disregard any plans to continue the project, calling it a misplaced priority at a time when many Ghanaians are struggling due to economic hardship.
The National Cathedral has been a contentious issue in Ghanaian politics. Former President Akufo-Addo initiated the project, citing a personal pledge to God.
Gyampo’s statement comes after President Mahama’s remarks during a recent ceremony at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) where he said the cathedral will be continued at a reasonable cost.
