Headlines Ghanas energy sector debt hits $3bn – John Jinapor
MON, 13 JAN 2025

Energy Minister-Designate John Jinapor has expressed serious concerns over Ghana’s escalating debt in the energy sector.

His remarks come amidst persistent challenges in the power sector, particularly the government’s unresolved financial obligations to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), which stood at $1.2 billion as of October 2024.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 13, Jinapor revealed that the energy sector’s debt had risen to over $3 billion as of January 12, 2025.

He highlighted that the Mahama administration had left an energy sector debt of $2.1 billion as of August 31, 2017.

“When we left office on August 31, 2017, the debt was $2.1 billion. As of yesterday, January 12, 2025, the outstanding debt has exceeded $3 billion,” Jinapor stated.

The Energy Minister-Designate attributed the mounting debt to unaccounted-for power sales, calling for immediate measures to address the issue.
