The vetting of President John Dramani Mahama's first ministerial nominees on Monday, January 13, 2025, was marked by heated exchanges between members of Parliament's Appointments Committee.

Tensions flared when Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin criticized the nomination process, asserting that it did not fully align with parliamentary procedures.

His remarks drew a swift rebuttal from Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central, who defended the process and questioned the validity of some parliamentary rules that had been overturned by the recent Supreme Court ruling.

The heated debate escalated when Afenyo-Markin insisted on continuing his statement despite a request from Bernard Ahiafor, the 1st Deputy Speaker and chairman of the committee to conclude.

"I have been on this Appointment Committee when the then Minority Leader spent 20 minutes presenting his opening remarks... If you don't want me to speak, let me know.

“Don't start using the words 'you may conclude'. With the greatest respect, these interjections must stop," Afenyo-Markin retorted, expressing frustration at the chairman's interruptions.

In a calm but firm reaction, Bernard Ahiafor declared his resolve. “Honourable Minority Leader, you know the chairman is a man with an indomitable spirit. I would not be threatened," he stated.
