National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah of Essikado-Ketan and Theresa Lardy Awuni of Okaikwei North, celebrated their electoral victories over Charles Bissue and his wife, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, during the 2025 presidential inauguration.
The Bissues, who had been vying to become Ghana’s first couple in Parliament, were defeated in their respective constituencies by the NDC candidates in the 2024 parliamentary election.
Charles Bissue, running in Essikado-Ketan, garnered 17,754 votes but was beaten by Prof. Ayensu-Danquah, who secured 26,166 votes.
His wife, Nana Ama Dokua contested in Okaikwei North but lost to incumbent MP Theresa Awuni, who received 28,363 votes to Dokua’s 20,627.
During the inauguration on January 7, 2024, a viral video captured the two victorious MPs mocking their opponents.
Prof. Ayensu-Danquah jokingly said, “In Essikado-Ketan, I ‘murdered’ the husband,” prompting laughter from Theresa Awuni, who added, “And I retired the wife.”
Prof. Ayensu-Danquah then concluded, “They are both retired from politics,” as the two celebrated by chanting “girl power, girl power!”
