A communicator for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged parents to refrain from pressuring President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, emphasizing that it is not the government’s main focus at this time.
Speaking in a video shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the communicator explained that President Mahama's top priority is implementing his 24-hour economy policy.
"If you think you don't have money to send your child to senior high school, let him or her stay home. Before Free SHS, parents sacrificed to send their children to school one at a time.
“So, if you have more than one child completing basic school, let one go first and complete before sending the next. Don't pressure Mahama; he has not committed to prioritizing Free SHS over his 24-hour economy policy," she said.
The comments come amid reactions about the future of the Free SHS policy.
Meanwhile, ahead of the 2024 general elections, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia reassured Ghanaians that the party plans to review, not cancel the policy.
He criticized its poor implementation under the previous administration, arguing that the NDC intends to refine and enhance the program to improve educational outcomes.
Asiedu Nketia dismissed allegations of the NDC's intention to abolish Free SHS, labeling them as political propaganda by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He maintained that the party remains committed to making the policy more effective and sustainable while addressing its current challenges.
