President John Dramani Mahama has directed for urgent investigations into the deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 general elections.

In a letter sent to the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Mahama has requested the formation of a special taskforce to probe the tragic deaths, which he claims have marred the country’s democratic process.

The letter, dated January 10, 2025, marks one of Mahama’s key promises during his first 120 days in office, following his victory in the 2024 general elections.

His administration has committed to reopening several high-profile unresolved cases, including those surrounding the killings that took place during the 2020 elections.

“These incidents, which occurred in various parts of the country, have left a lasting scar on our democratic process, and it is imperative that justice is served for the victims and their families,” the president’s letter stated in part.

The president emphasized the need for a dedicated taskforce within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), specifically for these cases.

He also requested a comprehensive review of the role played by security personnel at the affected polling stations, as well as the use of forensic evidence to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

“We respectfully propose the establishment of a dedicated investigative taskforce to focus solely on these cases, ensuring undivided attention and efficient handling of this matter,” Mahama wrote in the letter.

To ensure full transparency, Mahama’s office also proposed close collaboration with eyewitnesses, victims’ families, and other relevant individuals who may have critical information.

“Employ advanced forensic techniques to analyze any physical evidence from the crime scenes, including bullet casings, weaponry, and other materials,” the President urged.

The request was also accompanied by a call for collaboration with the Electoral Commission and other civic bodies to review the reports of the 2020 and 2024 elections.

To maintain public trust, Mahama called for regular updates on the progress of the investigations, reassuring Ghanaians that the truth will be uncovered and justice will be served.
