Press Statement Center For Social Democracy Ghana calls for retention of Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament
THU, 02 JAN 2025

The Center for Social Democracy (CSD) is throwing its weight behind the renomination and reelection of Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament.

The Centre is of the view that the 9th Parliament presents a fine opportunity to consolidate various reforms initiated under Speaker Bagbin's leadership and undertake the much-needed constitutional reforms that will yield better democratic dividends for the good people of Ghana.

Having thoroughly assessed Speaker Bagbin's performance, CSD Ghana has come to the sound conclusion that his retention as Speaker will be in the country's best interest.

Speaker Bagbin's impeccable track record of service and dedication to Ghana’s parliamentary democracy makes him an ideal candidate to continue in this critical role. As a distinguished statesman, he has demonstrated unparalleled leadership and a commitment to fostering collaboration across the political divide, ensuring that the values of democracy and good governance are upheld in our nation. He gladly demonstrated the above as Speaker of 8th Parliament - a hung Parliament that required exceptional leadership qualities to navigate. This he has done tactically to the admiration of many Ghanaians.

Hon. Bagbin's dedication to public service is unparalleled. Having been an MP for Nadowli West, later Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency for seven consecutive terms, Chairman of various Committees in Parliament, Minority and Majority Leader, Minister of State and Second Deputy Speaker.

His election on January 7, 2021, as Speaker of the 8th Parliament, marked a historic milestone in Ghana’s democracy and demonstrated his broad appeal across the political spectrum.

Under his leadership as Speaker, Parliament has witnessed progressive reforms that have enhanced transparency, strengthened oversight, and promoted effective governance.

His depth of experience and commitment to democratic ideals make him uniquely positioned to lead the 9th Parliament with integrity and vision.

Retaining Hon. Bagbin as Speaker will not only consolidate the gains made in Parliament under his stewardship but also serve as a testament to the NDC's dedication to fostering unity, continuity, and progress in Ghana’s democratic journey.

We, at the Center for Social Democracy, firmly believe that Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s continued leadership as Speaker will be instrumental in advancing the legislative agenda of the 9th Parliament and building a stronger, more inclusive democracy.
