The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has celebrated his party’s decisive victory in the December 7, 2024, election, stating that the Electoral Commission was compelled to declare the party winner due to their overwhelming votes margin.
Speaking at the NDC Youth Wing's Victory Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, December 22, 2024, Asiedu Nketiah alleged that the EC, led by Jean Mensa, was biased against the NDC.
He claimed that the overwhelming margin of the NDC’s victory left the EC with no choice but to declare John Dramani Mahama the winner of the presidential election.
“You know what? We were not just fighting the elephant (NPP); we were fighting the elephant, the referee, and the security forces. We had to carry our referee into the ring. Thank God we achieved a technical knockout, which forced the referee to declare us winners against her will,” he said.
Asiedu Nketiah also addressed the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP)'s reaction to the defeat, describing their actions as the "final kicks of a dying elephant."
He criticized the EC's re-collation and declaration of results in some constituencies, which led to the NPP retaining seven parliamentary seats.
“They are in denial, going through what psychologists call the 'Illusive Grieving Process.’ After such a humiliating defeat, they refuse to accept reality, leading to what I describe as momentary madness. Let’s give them space to express this for a while; eventually, they’ll come back to their senses,” he remarked.
Asiedu Nketiah lauded the efforts of the NDC youth, emphasizing their vigilance and dedication throughout the campaign and election process. He assured them that President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s government would prioritize the welfare of the youth and deliver his promises.
George Opare Addo, the National Youth Organizer, also celebrated the youth's role, particularly in minimizing the NPP’s dominance in their stronghold of the Ashanti Region.
“If we managed to keep the NPP in check in the Ashanti Region, it’s thanks to the young men and women who ensured vigilance and worked tirelessly. That’s why the NPP couldn’t ‘fly’ in Ashanti,” he stated.
The thanksgiving service, held at the Accra Mall, featured several party leaders and notable clergy men, alongside performances from prominent gospel artists like Nacee, Uncle Ato, Piesie Esther, among others.
