A tragic hunting accident in the Nsata Forest Reserve has left the community in shock after a 53-year-old hunter, Philip Mado, was mistakenly shot and killed by a fellow hunter over the weekend.
The New Edubiase police in the Ashanti region have launched an investigation into the incident, which highlights the inherent risks associated with hunting.
According to initial reports, the tragedy unfolded when Philip Mado and his colleague, Felix Gogo—popularly known as "Taller"—set out on a hunting expedition to earn a living. Both men, residents of Nsata, were familiar with the forest, known for its wildlife and ecological richness.
During the expedition, Mado successfully shot a grass cutter, a prized rodent often hunted for its meat. However, the injured animal eluded immediate capture, prompting Mado to alert Gogo and the rest of the party. While Mado tracked the animal through the underbrush, Gogo, hearing movement and mistaking it for the grass cutter, fired his weapon.
In a devastating twist, Gogo’s shot hit Mado instead of the animal. Realizing the fatal mistake, Gogo reportedly fell into a state of shock but took responsibility for his actions. He surrendered to the New Edubiase police, where he was subsequently arrested.
Authorities have classified the incident as a serious matter and are conducting a thorough investigation to uncover all the facts. Other members of the hunting party who were present are also being sought to provide additional information.
The community has been left stunned by the tragedy, with many residents calling for improved safety measures and stricter regulations for hunting. Some have emphasized the need for better training to prevent such heartbreaking accidents in the future.
Police investigations are ongoing as the community mourns the loss of a familiar figure in Nsata.
