The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has urged President-Elect John Dramani Mahama and his incoming government to recognize and support media houses that stood by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during challenging times, despite intimidation and sabotage.
Mr. Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the GFL, commended these media houses and journalists for their loyalty and resilience in the face of threats, blackmail, dismissals, and even attempts to shut them down.
“The contributions of these loyal media houses and individual journalists largely contributed to the overwhelming victory of President-Elect Mahama and the NDC Parliamentary Candidates,” he stated.
Mr. Koomson emphasized the sacrifices made by these journalists, saying, “Some loyal media houses and journalists must be given special recognition for supporting the NDC and President-Elect Mahama, even while facing significant sabotage for speaking truth to power.”
He accused the outgoing administration, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, of using security operatives to intimidate opponents, including journalists and media houses.
Expressing optimism about the NDC’s victory, Mr. Koomson said it would restore faith among Ghanaians. He also issued a warning to NPP politicians who contributed to the nation’s hardships, stating, “There is always a day of accountability. The NPP faced their judgment day on December 7th and failed woefully. The verdict from the Ghanaian electorate, who served as judges in the trial, passed an overwhelming vote of no confidence in the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration and their parliamentary candidates.”
The GFL Secretary General called for the execution of “Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL)” to hold corrupt appointees of the outgoing government accountable. “How could they let our elderly citizens picket daily just to claim their rightful pensions?” he questioned.
Reflecting on former President Mahama’s 2016 statement that posterity would vindicate his leadership, Mr. Koomson remarked, “John Mahama said posterity would judge his work, and indeed, it has. The NPP’s poor governance has validated his words.”
He urged the youth to remain vigilant and protect their future, cautioning, “The youth must never allow the NPP near power again. They have ruined the country and jeopardized your future.”
Mr. Koomson also called on President-Elect Mahama to focus on national development and fulfill his promises to Ghanaians. “The weaknesses of the NPP have been exposed. The NDC must not be complacent but instead use this opportunity to develop the country and meet the needs of the people,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Koomson reiterated his call for security forces to crack down on criminals posing as political activists who are taking over state properties and evicting public officials from their residences and offices.
He warned that some party operatives might exploit the tense political environment to attack individuals and blame the NDC for their illegal actions. “This blatant disregard for the law and threats to our democratic institutions must be addressed immediately,” he emphasized.
Mr. Koomson appealed to the government, security forces, and media to tackle the growing culture of violence and impunity, ensuring that Ghana’s democracy remains intact.
