Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has condemned the attack on two military officers by alleged members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at a polling station in the Obuasi East Constituency during the 2024 general elections.
Reports indicate that the altercation began when armed soldiers arrived at the polling station, despite assurances from the Ghana Armed Forces that military personnel would not be deployed to polling centres.
An NDC Communication Officer reportedly demanded that the soldiers leave, threatening police involvement if they refused.
Tensions escalated when the two soldiers resisted, leading to a physical confrontation.
Reacting to this on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Prof. Marfo expressed frustration over the incident.
“I learned that certain NDC members attacked two soldiers, and I was like, ‘What were the soldiers holding the guns for? Why didn’t they pull the trigger?’” he questioned.
“I was so pained that the soldiers allowed the NDC members to attack them, irrespective of their status. The soldiers should have shot their NDC attackers,” he added.
Prof. Marfo argued that the military, funded by taxpayers, is mandated to protect lives and property and should not be subjected to attacks by civilians.
“If security personnel are overpowered by civilians, it means we lack proper protection,” he stated.
