Henry Kwabena Kokofu, former CEO of the Forestry Commission, has called on members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain calm and limit blame games following the party’s defeat in the December 7, 2024, general elections.
In the presidential race, NPP flagbearer Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia garnered just over 4 million votes, losing to John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who secured over 6 million votes.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show, Kokofu admitted that the NPP’s leadership must also take the blame for the loss.
However, he emphasized the need for introspection and unity rather than finger-pointing as the party works to rebuild.
“Change is inevitable,” Kokofu remarked, adding, “The leadership is partly to blame for the election outcome, but we must limit the blame games and focus on rebuilding the party to win back the trust of Ghanaians.”
Amid reports of some NPP members directing their frustrations at figures such as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, and Gabby Otchere-Darko, Kokofu urged restraint and encouraged members to prioritize a constructive post-election analysis.
He also cautioned against post-election violence, including incidents involving some NDC supporters.
“Ghana remains the sovereign State of Ghanaians. Anytime they want to change their voting, they will do it and hand the nation over to whoever they choose to lead them,” he said.
