Professor Ransford Gyampo, a senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has called for sweeping changes in the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He argues that the party must be rescued from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and its current executive body.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points programme on Saturday, December 14, Prof. Gyampo warned of the potential collapse of the NPP if urgent steps are not taken to reform its leadership.
“Let me call on the owners of the NPP to rescue the party from the claws of Akufo-Addo and the entire executive of the party. They must stop the imminent disintegration of the party because we need a strong opposition to keep the government on its toes,” he said.
Prof. Gyampo further stressed the importance of safeguarding the party’s core traditions and values, which he believes are at risk under the current leadership.
“The party risks disintegrating if people do not come together to free it from the claws of Akufo-Addo and his remnants, remove all the executives of the NPP, and allow the party to restore its own tradition,” he added.
His remarks come amid growing dissatisfaction within the NPP following the party's defeat in the 2024 general elections.
The NPP is set to handover office on January 7, 2025.
