The Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has shed light on why some Majority MPs pushed for the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points programme, the MP explained that their call to oust the former Finance Minister was fueled by his perceived arrogance and unchecked authority.
He added that Ofori-Atta’s increasing influence overshadowed that of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, creating concerns among MPs.
“Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta grew too pompous. He was more powerful than the President and the Vice President and that was why we wanted him out,” Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi stated.
In 2022, Appiah-Kubi and over 90 other Members of Parliament demanded Ofori-Atta's dismissal as economic challenges worsened, with international rating agencies downgrading Ghana's economy.
According to the MPs, their constituents were reeling under the high cost of living and expected decisive action from the government.
Despite mounting pressure, President Akufo-Addo stood by his Finance Minister, a decision some critics believe hurt the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Following the NPP's defeat in the December 7 presidential election, some have suggested that the refusal to sack Ken Ofori-Atta contributed to the party’s poor showing at the polls.
