The Vice Chairman of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's Campaign Team, Nana Akomea, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) anticipated a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 presidential election.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Nana Akomea disclosed that internal research conducted as early as February indicated Mahama's lead by nearly 10 percentage points. Despite this, the NPP worked to narrow the gap through their campaign efforts.
“Our research, which we conducted monthly, pointed to a likely Mahama victory. In February, the former president was leading by nearly 10 points. However, by September-October, we had reduced the gap to about 2 points, and we were confident of a strong showing,” Nana Akomea said.
He expressed concern over the significant voter apathy within the NPP base, noting that 2 million people who supported the party in 2020 abstained from voting this year.
He stressed the need for the party to investigate and address the underlying issues.
“There was a lot of apathy and disgruntlement among our supporters, which our polls clearly indicated. For 2 million people to stay away, we must understand why and resolve it,” he added.
John Dramani Mahama was declared President-elect by Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa on Monday, securing 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) against Dr. Bawumia's 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
The results mark a decisive win for the former president in his return to power.
