Dr Arthur Kobina Kennedy, a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who was suspended in 2015, has sent a message to former President John Dramani Mahama following his victory in the 2024 presidential election.
In a statement dated December 10, Dr Kennedy congratulated Mr Mahama on his “miraculous comeback” and urged him to seize the opportunity to rewrite his legacy by fighting corruption, promoting accountability, and halting the arrogance and impunity that have plagued governance.
“Seize this time to write your name on the right side of history,” Dr Kennedy wrote. “Fight corruption and let there be accountability for what has been done to our country. Halt galamsey and strengthen institutions. Let us feel that we do not have a nation that has serial, alternating one-party states dedicated to looting the public coffers.”
He also congratulated Ghanaian voters for what he described as their discernment in rejecting “corruption, incompetence, arrogance, and reckless disregard for the national interest.”
Dr Kennedy critiqued his own party, the NPP, attributing its electoral loss to years of looting public coffers, arrogance, and incompetence.
He noted that the party’s decision to back Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer further alienated voters.
“We lost because we spent eight years looting public coffers… and then we picked the public face of this crime against Ghanaians,” he said, adding that the party now needs a complete rebuild to regain its founding principles.
The Electoral Commission on December 9 declared John Dramani Mahama the winner of the presidential election with 56.55% of valid votes, marking his return to power after an eight-year hiatus.
