President-elect John Dramani Mahama has vowed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the violent incidents during the 2024 general elections that tragically resulted in the loss of lives.
He emphasised that accountability will be a priority, assuring Ghanaians that any individuals found responsible will face the law.
Speaking during a meeting with representatives of the European Union in Ghana, Mahama expressed gratitude for the youth's support and the technical assistance provided during the electoral process, including contributions from the EU mission.
He acknowledged that while the elections were largely smooth and successful, the violence that led to fatalities was unacceptable and demanded a thorough probe.
“To our young people, we want to thank you for the support before, during, and after the elections. The technical assistance provided, including the contributions from the EU mission, helped ensure a smooth and successful election. However, there were unfortunate incidents that led to the deaths of some individuals. It is our intention to investigate these events thoroughly. If individuals are found culpable, they must face the consequences of their actions,” Mahama stated.
The President-elect also urged the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to initiate investigations without delay. He warned that if the outgoing administration fails to act, his incoming government would address the issue as a priority.
“I hope this government will prioritize these investigations immediately. However, if they fail to act, the incoming NDC administration will take it up as a matter of urgency once we assume office,” he added.
